Mouth of the Beast

Suzy Kassem poetry
MOUTH OF THE BEAST

The sea was angry,
Smashing anything that came its
Way as it crashed onto the shore.
And my thoughts were thrashing,
Because I didn't know if I really loved him,
Or if he truly loved me,
And if our union was worth the time anymore.
So I told him to jump into the dangerous waters
To prove his love for me.
And without counting to three,
He tore off his pants and peeled off his sleeves,
Then ran into the ferocious sea -
Where the waves swallowed him and spit him out
They bashed him a hundred times,
And forced him underneath to swallow the salt.
He struggled to get out.
Gasping for air, he began to shout out his love for me,
And that's when I knew it was he who meant nothing to me -
For had my heart truly loved him,
It would have never sent him running straight
Into the mouth of a beast.

A Heart of Lapis

Heart of Lapis poem

A HEART OF LAPIS

The most beautiful stones adorn my neck
Like an Ancient Egyptian collar.
Two glistening balls of onyx sit on top,
Followed by a double stretch of coral.
At the center is a lapis heart,
Deeper in color than the Red Sea waters.
And I am so grateful for this heavenly gift;
This precious necklace is
My daughter.

The Three Bees

poem suzy kassem

THE THREE BEES

A young boy once asked
A wealthy beekeeper:
“What is the secret of
Your success?”
The beekeeper simply smiled
And replied:

“To be successful,
One has to be one of three bees:
The queen bee,
The hardest working bee,
Or the bee that does not fit in.
One success is inherited,
And the next one is earned.
While the last one is
Self-sought,
Self-served,
And happens on its own
Terms.”

“And which bee are you?”
Asked the boy.
The beekeeper then wiped
The sweat from his head
And said:
“The last may seem the riskiest,
But the glory of achievement
Is the most rewarding.
Freedom always comes at a high cost,
But only when you are
Your own boss,
Can you truly
Afford it.”
